But - used when connecting words and phrases that disagree with each other, or contrast.

(I speak English but not Spanish).
I love the smell of seafood, but I cannot eat it.
Or - (1) used when connecting words and phrases that agree in a negative manner.
I don't speak Spanish or Italian.
I can't attend the meetings on Friday or Monday because I will be out of town.
(2) used when listing alternatives or options
Would you like coffee, tea, or water?
You can take your vacation in June, July, or August.
